BORN TO EXPLORE THE UNIVERSE AROUND ME
Gianluca Masi, an astrophysicist and science communicator by profession, has been a photographer for a long time. Early in the ’80s of last century he started imaging intensively, experimenting a host of different techniques, both in his darkroom and on the field. On the meantime he studied not only the technicalities, but also the physics and chemistry involved in photography, creating an excellent basis for any kind of application, ready to support his creativity.
His work ranges from astrophotography (especially deep sky imaging with powerful telescopes: see his Virtual Telescope Project website) to theater, crossing wildlife, reportage, arts and people.
Nowadays, Gianluca Masi works on digital imaging, with the strong benefits, both at the imaging time and post-production, from the past experience and knowledge coming from the ancient times of film photography.
He uses two Canon 7D mark II camera bodies, with Canon EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM Fisheye, Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF-S 17-55mm 1:2,8 IS USM, Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 L IS USM II, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM II, Samyang fisheye 8 mm f/3.5 UMC CS II, Laowa 15mm f/4 1:1 Macro lens, Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC Aspherical, Samyang 16mm F/2.0 ED AS UMC CS. Canon 20D and 50D bodies are also available, as well as many other accessories.
His images have been published on renewed journals and websites worldwide.
In 2006 Gianluca Masi launched the Virtual Telescope Project, now the leading facility in the world as for robotic online astronomy for a wide audiance from all over the world. Here you will find some note about the research and outreach activities of the author.

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.”
“There is only you and your camera. The limitations in your photography are in yourself, for what we see is what we are.”
“Black and white are the colors of photography. They symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair to which mankind is subjected.”
